Delayed Recovery After Concussion in Athletes With ADHD
Athletes with ADHD can take 3-8 days longer to recover from concussions in addition to having worse symptoms and a higher risk of repeat concussions.
Evidence-based points:
- Those with ADHD taking stimulants as a from of treatment had a higher prevalence of repeat concussions than both those with ADHD not taking any stimulants and those without ADHD.
- Athletes with ADHD were more likely to be forced to quit their sport due to long-lasting symptoms or too many concussions.
Having this knowledge can allow us to personalize the return-to-learn and return-to-play protocols that we standardly implement when an athlete is recovering from a concussion. Having these personalized plans will help put into perspective not only for coaches, but for other healthcare professionals as well, just how individual concussion rehabilitation can be. There is no standard outline for recovery that works for every athlete and every athlete will require different forms of support throughout their journey to recovery.
