Effectiveness of Kinesiology Tape with Tension Facilitation in Improving Pain and Function in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) can make simple movements—like standing up, walking, or climbing stairs—feel difficult. Knee osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint condition that causes pain, stiffness, and functional limitations, often affecting mobility and athletic performance. With this being said, many people look for ways to ease that discomfort, and one tool that often comes up in rehab settings is kinesiology tape (KT). But what does the research say about how useful it really is?

Research findings:

KT may reduce pain and improve proprioception—but only short-term.

  • Studies show that KT applied with tension facilitation can reduce knee OA pain during functional activities. Research also notes improved joint position sense in both OA and healthy populations, likely due to enhanced sensory input and neuromuscular feedback.

Long-term functional or strength improvements remain inconsistent.

  • Other trials report little to no improvement compared to placebo tape. Variations in taping protocols, tape tension, and individual responses contribute to mixed results. Overall, KT is best considered a temporary adjunct—not a standalone solution.

Practical applications:

Use KT as a complementary tool—not a replacement for rehab.

  • KT should supplement proven interventions like strengthening, physical therapy, mobility training, and activity modification.

Combine KT with exercise to maximize perceived functional benefits.

  • Some research shows improved movement confidence and reduced discomfort during rehabilitation when KT is used alongside structured exercise sessions.

Apply selectively and assess individual response.

  • KT works better for some patients than others. Clinicians should trial KT during functional tasks and assess whether pain, mobility, or proprioception improves.
